There is plenty of controversy surrounding the issue of tanning booths and your immune system. Since they offer three times as much UV rays as the natural sunlight, it is believed the radiation can cause the skin cells to become damaged, mutated, and even killed. When this happens the immune system may be affected. The skin is your number one defense from allowing harmful germs that cause viruses and diseases. Once the skin cells are affected your body becomes more susceptible to various ailments. Various skin conditions are very possible including herpes, cold sores, psoriasis, and eczema. Once your immune system has been weakened you may find your energy zapped as you continually struggle with colds, the flu, and other ailments. You may also find any cuts or bruises you sustain will take longer than normal to heal. If the individual develops a serious type of problem such as pneumonia or cancer, having a weakened immune system means they will struggle more to fight off the infection or disease. The healthier immune system you have the more your body is able to help you fight such issues. Some reports indicate that individuals who use tanning booths have a lower immune system and therefore they end up having to take more over the counter and prescription medications. On the other side of the fence you have activists who state tanning booths affect your immune system in the same way a flu shot does. While you initially may see a decrease in the effectiveness of your immune system when you start using a tanning booth, soon it will be better than ever before. Since using a tanning booth helps your body produce more Vitamin D, it is believed it can help the immune system to fight off infections. It can also help to prevent injuries to bones. If such injuries occur then the extra Vitamin D can help them to heal faster.
