Is UV Tanning Bad for your Health?

Many different organizations have put restrictions on tanning bed products due to the damage caused by UV rays. While tanning beds haven’t been banned, each piece of equipment is required to carry warning labels indicating the health risks associated with using it.

Most tanning salons don’t want to take the risk of being sued if someone does experience health issues associated with tanning beds. Therefore, most of them require the individual to sign a release form stating that they understand the possible health risks involved.

The biggest issue relating to UV rays and tanning beds is the risk of skin cancer. It can be in one of three forms. Skin cancer can be effectively treated if it is caught early. Many people don’t know they have it until it is too late to treat it. Other people don’t respond well to treatment options. As a result, tens of thousands of people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year. The number of people dying from it continues to increase as well.

It is believed that UV rays from tanning beds can weaken the immune system. It can also cause the skin cells to mutate. This can render them a useless barrier against viruses and germs getting into the deep layers of skin and then into the body. While the research in this area is still ongoing, there are results that show UV rays from tanning beds are bad for your health and just as many stating that they are actually good for you.

The more you are exposed to UV rays from tanning beds, the higher risk you have of suffering health wise from it. If you have a family history of skin cancer you are more likely to get it yourself. Some people tan for years on a regular basis without ever suffering from health issues. Yet thousands of people find out each year that they aren’t so lucky.
